Ally and Lucy caught up with the delightful, vibrant and ultimate fitspo Lauren Hannaford. Lauren is a personal trainer, founder of the online FHIT program and is also a mum-to-be! The former professional gymnast and athlete has helped countless women and men achieve their goals with her realistic, time-savvy and holistic programs.

Lauren reveals how far out from your wedding day you should start a fitness and health program (the real question- how late can you leave it?), how long it takes to see changes both physical and mental (the good news is, it’s less time than you think!!) and she also shares her tips on how to make it through the festive season without undoing all your hard work.

What’s the most common question you get asked by brides and grooms when they come to you wanting to get fit before their wedding day?

Lauren Hannaford: The most common question would be how quickly can I do it? How do I get the most extreme results in least amount of time. I think people are so involved in getting everything else ready and racing around to get to the big day that the exercise fitness side of things falls to the wayside because they’re just so busy. Then they get into panic mode of how am I going to feel on the day in my dress or in my suit? And how do I get the quickest results in the shortest amount of time?

It’s not just about looking good but also about feeling super confident when you’re walking down the aisle and all eyes are on you. So how important is it to take that holistic approach when you are setting your fitness goals?

Lauren Hannaford: It’s super important. The main thing that I talk about is for people to understand why they want to achieve those results. If they understand why it is, then that they can stick to a program to get that feeling for the big day.

How soon will you see results after starting a health and fitness program?

Lauren Hannaford: It usually is two to three weeks if you really knuckle down and focus on exercising and eating healthy. But again, it’s about being consistent for that period of time, it’s not just exercising every single day as hard as you possibly can, and eating nothing, that is going to potentially have you lose weight quickly, but you’re going to feel really crappy so you still aren’t going to be happy with the results that you’re seeing.  If you focus and stay consistent, it usually is two to three weeks to start to notice and feel those differences.

That’s great to know you can still make positive changes two or three weeks out from your wedding!! But ideally, when should you start a fitness program?

Lauren Hannaford: The second that you think about it is when you should start. It’s hard to put a time frame because I think it is about an all-round lifestyle and consistency. You want to be able to create a consistent routine that continues on past your wedding day, so you know that it’s not going to stop after that and you’re going to continue to feel good and continue to work on yourself. It’s hard to put a specific timeframe but the second that you think should I start a program, start one.

We have all heard the saying ‘abs are made in the kitchen’, so then how important is nutrition versus fitness?

Lauren Hannaford: Working both nutrition and fitness together is the best option. But you can most definitely get results by really focusing on your nutrition because what you eat does directly affect your energy levels, your ability to exercise and be active. If you’re not eating nutritious food, then you’re not going to have that energy to train.

Does a 15minute workout really make a difference? It sounds too good to be true!

Lauren Hannaford: Absolutely. For the majority of my programs the workouts are only 15 minutes each. If you are time poor and you do want results, then you’ve got to be willing to work hard in that 15 minutes. But the brilliant thing about that is your body continues to burn for longer. If you’re doing that high intensity interval training for 15 minutes your body will continue burning for the majority of the day.  You can definitely achieve results with 15-minute workouts for sure.

With so many fitness programs on the market it can be overwhelming and a bit intimidating to know where to start, especially if you’ve been out of the game for a while, what’s your advice on getting started?

Lauren Hannaford: Not to harp on about it, but I bring it back to having people understand why they’re wanting to do it in the first place, they need to work out why they want to achieve a certain result. What is that emotional connection and then from that you start to work out the things that you do like to do and the things that you don’t like to do. I suggest people just get out there and give something a go, go for a walk each morning while you’re trying to figure out exactly which program you want to get started with. So many programs and gyms have free trials these days we really are spoilt for choice. It can be a bit overwhelming, but no program is wrong, just get it get out there and give something a go.

The Christmas and New Year period can be a very dangerous time for people who are trying to stick to a fitness program. What are your tips on getting through this festive period without undoing all your hard work?

Lauren Hannaford: It’s all about consistency. If you are in a pretty consistent routine with exercise and eating healthy leading into that time, if you keep that sort of overall consistency, then you’re going to be okay. You don’t want to take any fun out of this festive time! But I’d suggest to keep up your water intake, which also will keep you feeling full so then you might not find yourself going back for that second serve at Christmas lunch! Get up in the morning and just go for a walk or do some sort of workout, then it just energizes you for the day it kicks in those endorphins and you feel good about yourself, then you tend to naturally make healthier choices!
